History of Botanical Oils
Botanical
Oils have been applied to the skin to maintain its natural beauty and
cure disorders since the early days of humankind. The question of which
plant is used depends on the geographical situation and the experience
gathered in this region through the ages, as every region has its own
specific sources and preferences.
In
Western civilization many oils that are also used as cheap food oils
became popular for cosmetic application. As a consequence, useful but
less widespread oils were "forgotten" over the years and replaced by
cheaper, larger volume oils or synthetic products.
Fortunately,
many interesting oils were rediscovered when scientists began to
explore plants and their seeds more systematically. Apart from these
hitherto neglected oils, also oils with unusual properties and chemical
structures that were unknown at that time, were identified and focused
on. Knowledge of the mode of action of the individual components of
natural oils improved vastly.
At
the same time this development has coincided with the increasing public
interest in natural, plant-derived, and non-animal products during
recent years.
To
